Leo introduces the kids at Sophie’s Place in Kingston as we celebrate August birthdays. I ask Mary what she wants to sing. She starts with Row Your Boat, then caretaker Ingrid gets the kids to perform our favorite Nat & Wendy Song, Take a Grip, take another grip sister! Hold on and never let go! No matter what the people of the world may say, hold on and never let go! I need somebody to help me lift Jesus…Clap your hands and help me lift Jesus, stomp your feet and help me lift Jesus, shake your body and help me lift Jesus. The kids LOVE it and try to get into the song!

Unfortunaltely, today many kids think foods come from fast food restaurants or a box from the freezer and have no idea how foods are grown or prepared. Here are some recipes that are easy and kid friendly. Take some time to invite your kids into the kitchen to watch or help you prepare some of these old-fashion items such as Corn Dogs, Barbecue Wieners, or Upside Down Pizza Pie. Your kids will love you for it.

HOMEMADE CORN DOGS

This is an old recipe from my childhood.

2/3 cup corn meal

1 egg, beaten

1 tsp baking powder

milk

1 cup flour

1/2 tsp salt

hot dogs

Mix the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, and salt together in a shallow dish; stir in the egg and enough milk to make a stiff batter. Remove hot dogs from package, dry with paper towels and insert a wooden skewer in one end and over halfway through the hot dog. Dip in batter to coat well. Deep fry at 400 degrees until golden brown. Drain on a cookie sheet lined with paper towels.

BARBECUE WIENERS

This is a recipe one of the community mothers served when I was a kid in the 1950s.

1 onion, chopped

3 tbsp vegetable oil

1 tbsp brown sugar

1 tsp dry mustard

salt and pepper to taste

1/2 cup catsup

1/2 cup water

1/4 cup cider vinegar

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

12 wieners, halved lengthwise

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Brown onions in oil; add the brown sugar, dry mustard, salt and pepper, catsup, water, vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir mixture to blend well and simmer for 15 minutes. Place the wieners, cut side down, in a shallow baking dish. Pour the heated sauce over the wieners. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 30 minutes.

UPSIDE DOWN PIZZA PIE

This recipe is from an old church cookbook.

1 lb ground beef

1/2 cup chopped celery

1/2 cup chopped onion

1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper

1 tbsp shortening

1/2 tsp salt

1 can (10 3/4-oz) tomato soup

1 1/2 cups Bisquick mix

1/2 cup milk

3 slices of processed cheese, cut diagnally

Preheat oven to 450 degrees.

In a heavy oven-proof skillet, brown beef with the celery, onion, and bell pepper in the shortening. Remove from the and drain off all excess fat. Add the tomato soup and salt; mix together well. Spread the mixture evenly in the pan. Mix the Bisquick mix and the milk together. Roll the dough into a circle slightly smaller than the skillet. Place dough over the top of the meat mixture. Bake at 450 degrees for 15 minutes or until the biscuit mix crust is golden brown. Remove from oven and turn upside down on a serving platter. Top with the cheese slices and allow cheese to melt. Cut into wedges and serve.

Enjoy!

Contrary to the common belief, kids do enjoy cooking. One obvious reason for this is, when cooking, your kid will be exposed to many colorful ingredients. Teaching your kids to cook is also a good way to explain to them how measurements work and how important is patience. But of course, the most important part in getting your child to feel competent at cooking is that it’ll lessen your work and stress in the kitchen. It has been proven that having a kid help in the kitchen can lessen the mad rush that most adults feel when they’re dealing with the stove and pots.

When is the right time to acquaint your kid in the kitchen, you ask? Actually, there is no “best time”. Of course, you can teach him anytime in the day. But it is better to teach a kid how to cook when preparing dinner. Aside from the fact that everybody in your family will be able to appreciate the food the lad has cooked, there are also a lot of easy dinner recipes that both of you can try without getting hassled. One good example is the traditional “Beans and Franks”. Apart from being affordable (this recipe only needs a number of hotdogs, mustard and a big can of baked beans), the preparation of this dish is so easy that your kid can do it himself. It’s a good start to teach your kid how to work with an oven too.

If your kid is having a party, you can encourage him to prepare the food with you. Parties are actually the perfect “excuses” to teach your kid the basics of food preparation. Most kids party recipes are easy to make and colorful and they will definitely catch the interest of your kid. One simple kids party recipe is Cheese shapes. For this recipe, your kid can freely use his imagination in shaping the puff pastry. The fact that he can eat his “shapes” after they have been baked will surely excite him.
