Silly question about mustard?

I need Dijon mustard for a recipe I am making, but I only have Gulden’s which says on the label “spicy brown mustard”. Is that the same as Dijon at all? Thanks!

It will give a slightly different flavor, but yes, you can use it instead.

    It is similary.
But all that matters is what you like. I mean no matter what brand all mustard is mustard. They all lead back to one taste from tangy to spicy

    Hope i helped

It’s not exactly the same as Dijon, but the flavor is similar. Dijon-style mustard is paler in color and a bit stronger in flavor than Gulden’s Brown. If it’s all you’ve got, and you can’t get to the grocery store to pick up some proper Dijon, I don’t think it would do any freat harm to your recipe to substitute the Gulden’s.

It will taste different, however, unless its a main ingredient…it shouldn’t change it that signifigantly. Use it!

I believe Dijon has white wine in it—using spicy mustard will definitely affect the flavor of whatever you are making. I would cut the size of the portion called for in the recipe and anticipate a new flavor experience!

I’m sure you can substitute the spicy brown mustard for dijon but I don’t think it will have the same taste at all. Dijon usually has a stronger taste..like horseradish. If you have some horseradish around, maybe you can just add a bit to your spicy brown.

No!!! Spicy brown mustard is NOT Dijon mustard. Dijon mustard is more of a grayish color and has a component of white wine. It’s taste is very distinctive, as is spicy brown mustard and your basic yellow mustard. Depending on what the recipe is for, a nice stoneground mustard with the Dijon white wine component might work nicely and give a bit of a bite that many other prepared mustards do not have.
